Broken glass chirps

Here’s a quick action scene to start your day!

There it was again. The birds sounded sick again. All around me their usual cries of joy sounded like ones of a sick and twisted world. Like the twinkling of glass right after it had been broken, the chirps of the birds had taken a sickly hue.

“There it is again…” My mother whispered to herself worriedly as she stared out the window. “Serena, go and hide now.” She said suddenly.

I stood on my tip-toes desperately trying to peek around her, to see what was outside. All I could see was a dark forecast headed our way. It was…unusually fast.

She suddenly turned, angry at me, pushing me so hard in my shoulders I almost fell down. “Hide! Now!” She said in quick gasping breaths as if her worst fears had just come true.

I stumbled as I tried to run towards the hiding place. My mother had told me about it several times before. I always wondered what it was supposed to be for and now that the situation arose that I was being told to go there, I still had no idea what the occasion was.

I scooted inside the cramped space, making myself as small as possible. It was only then that I realized there was not enough space for my mother. Whatever the hiding place was for, she had not planned on using it herself.
