The Stitches of a Broken Heart

Stitched-Red-Broken-Heart

the stitches on a broken heart
are made of the most curious of things
they’re made of memories and hobbies
and long hikes in the Spring
the stitches on a broken heart
are not a thread at all
not in the way we think
this thread begins to unravel every Fall
the stitches on a broken heart
are not a temporary feat
they are there forever
keeping things nice and neat
and when you tug the wrong way
a pain will tend to draw
throughout your body as a whole
those stitches sometimes rubbing raw
all the little holes
the stitches on a broken heart
vary day by day
sometimes what holds you together now
is different from yesterday
like the Moon we go through phases
and our interests come and go
but the stitches never fade away
instead they begin to grow
if our hearts were something naked
that needed a sweater vest
the stitches do prove to band together
to crochet a type of dress
eventually you’ve an armor
that’s warm and tight and snug
an armor made of soft cotton
not an iron shield of which to lug
around with you weighing you down
because that’s not what healing is
you didn’t move you didn’t stretch
it calcified because you missed
the opportunities to drag yourself
back up on your feet
a broken heart needs stitches
not a safe in which to keep
the stitches of a broken heart
are made of the most curious things
it’s up to you to decide
what things make up your strings
