Skeleton Glass

An older poem I came across. Enjoy!

I tip this glass to my lips
and watch the skeletons swim
I tip this drink down my throat
and drown the demons within.
A glass with a cute little saying
and a liquid with fire inside
A culture that promotes it when
you slowly poison yourself and lie
lie that it’s better
with another shot in the glass
lie that its better
when you drunkenly attack.
Because you didn’t mean what you said
you couldn’t have
you were drunk
Even though it’s said that
“drunken words are sober thoughts”
But the lies are so beautiful
and the lights on the bar are a beautiful halo
compared to the demons you live with at home
and the sober mind that will know.
So…I tip this glass to my lips
and watch the skeletons swim
I tip this drink down my throat
and drown the demons within.
Except they know how to swim…
and now the skeletons are out of the closet
dancing in the glass in front of you as you drink
